GTA 6 Delayed Again: Why Rockstar Is Taking So Long

“Here we go again.”

That iconic Grand Theft Auto quote perfectly sums up how fans reacted when GTA 6 faced yet another delay. For the second time, Rockstar Games has informed players they’ll need to wait longer for what many expect to be one of the biggest entertainment releases in history.

While Rockstar is known for delaying its games until they meet extremely high standards, millions of fans are now wondering: what’s causing the slowdown?

GTA 6 Timeline: From Announcement to New Release Date

Rockstar confirmed the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 in February 2022. The first trailer—released 18 months later—set an initial launch window of 2025.

Key early details included:

  • Two protagonists: Jason and Lucia
  • Setting: Leonida, a fictional U.S. state inspired by Florida
  • Strong inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde

In 2023, Rockstar pushed the release to 26 May 2026, which fans noted matches the date of Bonnie and Clyde’s funeral—a symbolic choice that built even more hype.

But that date didn’t hold either.

The company has now shifted the release to 19 November 2026, marking another major delay.

Why Is GTA 6 Taking So Long?

1. Massive Expectations and Record-Breaking Hype

GTA 6 trailers have shattered YouTube viewership records and consistently dominate global “most anticipated games” lists.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has emphasized that every Rockstar release must surprise and impress players.

With Red Dead Redemption 2 still considered a benchmark open-world game, expectations for GTA 6 are sky-high. Rockstar’s reputation for detail, innovation, and realism pushes the development timeline further.

Both RDR2 and GTA 5 experienced multiple delays, reinforcing Rockstar’s obsession with “seeking perfection.”

2. Increasing Costs and Complexity in Modern Game Development

Creating a modern blockbuster game is more time-consuming and expensive than ever before.
Larger worlds, advanced AI, realistic animations, and intricate storylines all add to the lengthy development cycle.

The gaps between major game releases across the industry have been widening, and Rockstar faces those same challenges—on an even bigger scale.

3. Rockstar Still Makes Billions From Older Games

Another unique factor slowing GTA 6 is Rockstar’s continued success with existing titles.

  • GTA 5 is the 2nd best-selling game of all time
  • It sold 730,000 copies in the UK in 2024 alone
  • RDR2 sold 350,000 copies the same year
  • GTA Online continues to be one of the most-played games worldwide

Since GTA Online still generates massive revenue, Rockstar isn’t financially pressured to rush GTA 6.

However, Take-Two recently confirmed a decline in GTA Online engagement—one reason they need GTA 6 to eventually take the spotlight.

Experts say the true success of GTA 6 will depend on how well it transitions players from GTA Online to its new online mode.

Will GTA 6 Be Delayed Again?

Predicting Rockstar’s timeline is impossible.

The studio has a history of internal pressure, including accusations of “crunch culture”—mandatory overtime that has been criticized across the gaming industry.

Rockstar claims no one was forced to work extra hours and that it is actively improving working practices. Some reports, including from journalist Jason Schreier, suggest management wants to avoid crunch on GTA 6.

Complicating matters, around 30 Rockstar employees were recently terminated and have accused the company of blocking unionization efforts. Rockstar says the firings were due to confidential information leaks. While these issues may not be tied directly to the delay, losing experienced staff can slow development.

Fans Are Still Willing to Wait

Despite frustration, many players say they prefer Rockstar taking extra time to deliver what some already call the “game of the century.”
Whether the wait results in a masterpiece—or another disappointment—remains entirely in Rockstar’s hands.
